Health insurance

Health insurance (KV) is obligatory for all Swiss residents. This provides all insured persons with access to basic medical healthcare. In the event of illness, pregnancy or accidents, this ensures that medical treatment can be provided if it is not covered by accident insurance.

The insurance cover is independently taken out by the person subject to the insurance. The choice of authorised health insurance company is at the insured person’s discretion. The premium amounts are not income dependent but instead depend on the health insurance company, the place of residence and the insurance model selected. Under certain circumstances, the cantons cover part of the premiums for insured people on low incomes (individual premium reduction).
